The start of a new season always marks change in the fashion world, and as Michigan’s leaves turn golden, wardrobes at Michigan State University transform too. Some favorite pieces reappear from previous years, while others take the spotlight for the first time.
Nostalgia Returns to Campus Style
With Gen Z and late Millennials revisiting early 2000s TV classics like Gilmore Girls, The O.C., and Gossip Girl, this fall’s trends are steeped in nostalgia. Bootcut jeans, layered shirts, and preppy silhouettes dominate once again.
“I’m loving that the aesthetics of 2009 are coming back,” said VIM Magazine editor-in-chief Grace Oluwole. “We’re in such a nostalgic time, and there’s no better season to feel that than fall.”
The “Old Money” Revival
Gossip Girl has particularly influenced the return of the preppy, old-money aesthetic. Mini skirts, dress coats, long plaid scarves, kitten heels, and fabrics like silk and lace are defining the season.
Cycles of Fashion: 70s to 90s Influence
Trends often resurface, and this year’s fall styles prove it. “A lot of late ’90s and moody 70s influences are everywhere,” said freshman Scout Phillips. “Chunky jewelry especially—it’s huge this year.”
The oversized jewelry revival contrasts sharply with last year’s “clean girl” minimalism. Earrings and necklaces are bolder than ever, echoing 70s statement style.
Comfort Meets Elegance
As the air grows cooler, comfort becomes fashion’s core. Sweaters, coordinated sweat sets, mini skirts, and boots return to prominence. Knee-high boots and kitten heels are especially popular.
“Who doesn’t love knee-high boots?” Oluwole said. “They instantly elevate any outfit.”
Trending Accessories and Campus Staples
Longchamp tote bags, chunky square glasses, and the Van Cleef pattern are among this season’s must-haves. Social media—especially TikTok and Pinterest—drives these trends, with “Fall 2025 outfit ideas” searches exploding online.
This Year’s Color Palette
Classic autumn tones of red, orange, and purple now share space with chocolate brown and baby pink. “Brown and pink together look amazing,” said assistant professor Saetbyul Park. “I’m also seeing solid colors with minimal patterns and touches of leopard print.”
Prints That Pop: Polka Dots and Leopard
Leopard print and polka dots, both popular over summer, have carried into fall. Seen in mini skirts and tops, these patterns dominate the season’s trend cycle. “I can see polka dots lasting for future falls,” Phillips added.
Whether these looks become timeless or fleeting micro-trends, fall remains the season that invites everyone to revisit the comforting aesthetics of the past.
