AI in Fashion — Predicting the Next Trend

Fashion forecasting used to belong only to elite editors attending shows in Paris, Milan, London, and New York. Their judgments dictated what would appear in stores next season. But now, TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest have changed that hierarchy — millions of users shape what becomes fashionable.

A 2024 Launchmetrics report revealed that over 40% of consumers bought clothes or accessories through social media at least three times that year. “There’s more information available, and trends move faster,” said Amy Sullivan, Vice President at Stitch Fix.

How AI Shapes Modern Fashion Decisions

With massive amounts of data online, brands rely on AI to make decisions more efficiently. Instead of waiting for physical samples from overseas, Sullivan’s team used AI to visualize design options instantly.

When deciding between red or blue stripes for a shirt line, AI simulations helped them choose — they went with blue, backed by data.

Algorithms Behind Trend Prediction

AI analyzes countless images, runway photos, and social posts to forecast what will sell next.

According to Noémie Voyer from Heuritech, which collaborates with Prada, Skims, and New Balance,

Our AI detects early signals of trends months before they reach mainstream markets.

Heuritech’s model predicted dotted prints, flat-thong sandals, and the color yellow — all seen on 2025 runways and soon to reach mass retailers like H&M and Target.

Why Human Insight Still Matters

AI supports, but doesn’t replace, human intuition. Francesca Muston, Chief Forecasting Officer at WGSN, said:

AI supercharges what we do, but human rigor is essential.

Viral trends online don’t always turn into real-world purchases. “Entertainment and commerciality are different things,” Muston added. “A look can go viral — but that doesn’t mean people will buy it.”

The Future of AI-Driven Fashion

Fashion’s future lies in collaboration between technology and creativity. Algorithms can read the data, but people decide what’s beautiful — and what’s worth wearing.
