Bob Mackie Reflects on His Legendary Career

Legendary costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie has spent decades shaping the visual legacy of pop culture. Known for his dazzling, theatrical creations, Mackie has dressed icons such as Cher, Tina Turner, and Madonna, turning every performance and red carpet into a moment of glamour.

Taylor Swift Revives a Classic Design

Recently, Taylor Swift brought one of Mackie’s vintage looks back into the spotlight. She wore a Mackie creation in photos for her album “The Life of a Showgirl.”
“It was kind of a surprise,” Mackie told CBS Mornings. “I didn’t know she had those clothes — she borrowed them from the casino in Vegas.”
The costume was originally designed more than 40 years ago, for a Las Vegas show in the 1980s.

The Art Behind the Sketches

Though famous for his intricate sketches, Mackie said his creative process goes beyond the drawing board.
“My philosophy is to watch what they do — how they move, how they walk, how they sit,” he explained. “It’s very important. You can’t just put a dress on anybody.”

Working With Cher and Tina Turner

Mackie reflected on what made his collaborations with these legends so special.
“You don’t really know until you see them perform — that’s when you realize who they are,” he said. “Cher was never intimidated by anything I put on her — ever.”
He recalled that Tina Turner had a clear sense of style: “She always knew what she wanted. She’d say, ‘That’s too old-fashioned, I can’t wear that.’ Then she’d try it on and say, ‘Oh… well, that’s pretty good.’”

His Designs Live On

Decades later, Mackie’s creations continue to captivate. Outfits worn by Cher and Tina Turner will go up for auction in December, giving fans a chance to see them again.
“It’s OK,” he said with a smile. “I don’t keep them at home — they’re meant to be seen. The girls like watching someone else wear them. That’s fun.”

From the glitter of Las Vegas to the runways of Hollywood, Bob Mackie’s work remains a testament to artistry, individuality, and timeless glamour.
