The annual “This Is Me” fashion show is returning to Flint this December, bringing its celebrated community gathering for children with special needs and their families into its eighth year. What began as a small, local initiative has evolved into a welcoming platform where young participants can express confidence, joy and individuality.
A Celebration of Talent and Growth
The show will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Sloan Museum of Discovery. This year’s runway will feature designs from two new local designers, each contributing their own creative touch to an event that evolves annually.
“It’s always different each year,” said organizer Tracy Palmer. “We have new collaborations, new relationships and new resources. We’re excited to continue building something meaningful.”
A Partnership That Reflects the Event’s Mission
For 2025, Palmer has partnered with 810 Munchies, a Flint restaurant known for creating a safe and judgment-free space for families with disabilities. Owner Steven Brewer will host a meet-and-greet for participants from 4–6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13.
Brewer said he immediately agreed to join the project.
“Anything that supports the special needs community — I’m on board,” he said. “I’m the only special needs restaurant in the country.”
For the meet-and-greet, Brewer plans what he calls a “sloppy dinner,” covering a table with chicken strips and fries so kids can enjoy themselves freely and without restrictions.
Creating a Space Where Children Can Shine
Palmer launched “This Is Me” to offer children and teens with disabilities a safe environment to grow, express themselves and feel genuinely celebrated.
“At the beginning, they’re filled with fear and doubt,” she said. “Then you watch them grow and understand they deserve to be celebrated.”
Many participants return year after year, reaching milestones once believed impossible. Palmer recalled a boy named Aubrey — a child whose survival was uncertain during infancy.
“He’s five now, talking and doing so much on his own,” she said. “Those things bring me so much joy.”
The 2025 Theme: Freedom
This year’s theme is simple yet powerful: freedom. Freedom to be themselves, to express without limits and to embrace who they are.
“I think it’s important for people to accept you for who you are,” Palmer said. “This is me.”
Brewer added that Palmer’s mission echoes his own efforts to expand inclusive spaces for families with disabilities.
“People like her are why I do what I’m doing now,” he said. “We’re trying to create the best experiences and let these kids enjoy life the way everyone else does.”
