Meghan Markle at Balenciaga Show

Balenciaga’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli revealed that Meghan Markle reached out directly to ask if she could attend his show at Paris Fashion Week. Speaking to The Cut, Piccioli said there was nothing strategic or staged about her appearance — it all came from her genuine interest and long-standing friendship with him.

“Meghan and I met some years ago, and we’ve been texting ever since,” the Italian designer explained. “She reached out and said she’d love to come to the show. There was no strategy or big orchestration. I didn’t tell anyone she was coming because I wanted it to be a surprise.”

A Friendship Behind the Spotlight

Piccioli described Markle’s presence as a rare and beautiful surprise in the fashion world. The two have maintained a close connection over the years, often collaborating on outfits for public appearances and major international events.

According to Markle’s spokesperson, she attended the show to support Piccioli as he debuted his first collection since becoming Balenciaga’s creative director in July. “Over the years, the Duchess has worn many of Pierpaolo’s designs,” they shared, adding that her admiration for his craftsmanship and modern elegance made this appearance especially meaningful.

Meghan’s Paris Moment

On October 4, Meghan Markle made her debut at Paris Fashion Week wearing a striking all-white look — a long-sleeved tunic with a flowing cape and wide-leg trousers. She completed the minimalist ensemble with black pointed heels, a matching clutch, and diamond studs.

Her entrance immediately caused a stir among attendees, many of whom were unaware of her appearance beforehand. Photos captured an “awkward moment” between Markle and Piccioli, though sources emphasize their long friendship.

Public Reaction and Controversy

While many praised Markle’s polished look and loyalty to a designer friend, others criticized her for supporting Balenciaga — a brand that has faced backlash for controversial advertising campaigns. Social media reactions were mixed, with some calling her attendance “ironic” given the brand’s past controversies.

Still, the Duchess appeared focused on her purpose: supporting a creative partner embarking on a new artistic chapter. As her spokesperson concluded, “This evening reflects the culmination of many years of artistry and friendship.”

Markle, 44, shares two children — Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4 — with Prince Harry, 41.
