Cape Town's Lukhanyo Mdingi was crowned the winner of the 2023 Amiri Prize, a renowned fashion award. Selected from nine contenders by founder Mike Amiri and a panel of esteemed judges, Lukhanyo will benefit from a year of mentorship with Amiri and a $100,000 USD grant. Established in 2015, Mdingi's fashion brand has gained global recognition by collaborating with local artisans, showcasing both creativity and cultural heritage. Commenting on the honor, Mdingi expressed gratitude for the growth opportunity for his brand. Mike Amiri highlighted Mdingi's distinct vision, emphasizing the importance of his community-driven purpose. Introduced in 2021, the Amiri Prize expanded to international entrants in 2023, receiving almost 1,000 applications. Notable finalists included Abdel El Tayeb, Dorian Who, Grace Ling, and Keith Herron, among others.
