Kahlana Barfield Brown: Power of Style

Howard University alumna Kahlana Barfield Brown, founder of her own clothing brand KBB by Kahlana, leads this year’s Homecoming Parade as grand marshal. Her collaborations with Target and Nike have solidified her reputation as a true force in fashion — merging creativity, culture, and purpose.

From Journalism to Fashion Authority

Born in Seattle and educated at Howard University, where she studied Journalism and Fashion Merchandising, Kahlana’s journey began in the media world.
At InStyle magazine, she rose from assistant beauty editor to beauty director, spending over a decade shaping the publication’s vision and championing authentic representation in beauty and style.

Designing Her Own Path

The Target Collaboration

In 2022, Kahlana joined forces with Target to launch Future Collective, a streetwear-inspired collection that captured her personal aesthetic — confident, elevated, and inclusive.

The Nike Partnership

In 2024, she partnered with Nike to design a custom Air Force 1 for the Yardrunners program. The limited-edition shoe celebrated HBCU pride and instantly became a coveted collector’s piece.

The Creation of KBB by Kahlana

In 2025, she unveiled her own fashion line, KBB by Kahlana, representing the next evolution of her creative journey. The brand focuses on elevated essentials and intentional design, empowering women to express individuality through timeless silhouettes and confident minimalism.

Family, Purpose, and Inspiration

A proud mother of two daughters, Kahlana finds her daily inspiration in family life. Through her work, she continues to champion representation and authenticity, proving that true style is as much about purpose as it is about elegance.
